GO THE MATILDAS – 2023
Despite the fact that I have never been a football fan I am ‘caught up’ in the excitement pervading Australia at present – the current FIFA Women’s World Cup competition in which the Australian women’s national soccer team is participating. Our team’s official nickname is ‘the Matildas’ which originates from the well known Australian folk song “Waltzing Matilda” – a song I learned as a child residing in South Africa.
Australia and New Zealand are co-hosting this wonderful event which takes place every 4 years. The competition commenced on the 20th of July with the final to be played in Sydney this coming Sunday the 20th of August.
Australia is fortunate to have a wonderful team comprised of many talented, experienced and dedicated players with an excellent coach, Tony Gustavsson, at the helm. As the Australian team has reached the semi-finals Matilda ‘fever’ has continued to expand creating a wonderful positive atmosphere for all who reside in Oz.
At a time when the upcoming Voice Referendum is creating divisions, within the Australian population, the FIFA Women’s World Cup has enthralled and united the country. Record numbers of people have watched the matches from every possible venue – homes, pubs, stadiums, outdoor areas and aeroplanes.
Overseas spectators have journeyed from far and wide to support their respective teams adding colour and enthusiasm to the event; as well as buoying the economy!!
Schools are encouraging students to wear green and gold outfits to support the Matildas. Many houses are adorned with the Australian flag, while restaurants and pubs have decorated their establishments to their heart’s content.
Tonight’s semi-final, between Australia and England commences at 8pm (AEST). Estimates of the time the game will end varies, depending on whether extra time will be needed for a team to be victorious.
Regardless of the outcome I am sure there will be many bleary eyed, hoarse students and teachers attending school tomorrow in the Eastern states. Some may, in fact, need a day at home to recover. Workplaces may also be depleted.
I am likely to spend some time tonight watching 2 amazing teams vie for a place in the finals. While I have become a Matilda supporter I have decided to abstain from having a Matilda tattoo engraved on my body.
Go the Matildas – Aussie,, Aussie, Aussie Oi Oi Oi.
Take care, stay safe, remember that smiling and laughter are good for all of us.
