MEET BAILEY AND BUDDY
Being greeted by family upon arriving in Perth felt great…..at last we are able to reconnect in person.
Approximately 8 months ago my sister in law, Karen, adopted 5 year old brothers – Bailey and Buddy, a Jack Russel/Pomeranian mixture. The dogs had lived in the backyard of their previous owner and were unaccustomed to living indoors. With assistance from a trainer Karen has done a wonderful job in teaching them to reside inside her house and use the ‘doggie door’ when required.
My arrival was a first – a new person coming to stay in their home!
A cacophony of barks greeted us when we arrived home from the airport. Excitement knew no bounds “Yay mum is home!” I was examined immediately by Bailey who was keen to make my acquaintance. Buddy required a little longer to cope with my presence but we soon became the best of friends. Of course, like their human counterparts every dog has a different personality.

In the morning Buddy whimpered outside my door wanting to come in and investigate. When I opened the door he bounded in eagerly, closely followed by Bailey. Both settled on my bed – one on the right, the other on my left. A 5 minute ‘love in’ with tummy rubs was enjoyed and then it was time for breakfast.
I decided to buy the boys some new toys – after all I was residing in their home. The pair were ecstatic when presented with a few new objects. Great let’s see how quickly we can destroy the stuffed animal – 5 minutes, a new record! The other toys were definitely a better choice with some becoming favourites and affording hours of enjoyment.
The following morning my attempt to dress was interrupted by the arrival of 2 gents who were determined to play. I tell them I have no toys in the room. I wonder how much they understand – the pair exited the room quickly, returning shortly carrying one of their favourite toys. Of course they chose to sit on my clothes, intent on playing, and proceeded to drop the toy at my feet. It was no contest, dressing would need to wait, playing was the first order of the day.
I am somewhat surprised that my body is not black and blue – I served as a runway, jumping pad and cushion but was also the recipient of copious licks from both Buddy and Bailey.
While sitting and reading quietly a toy was suddenly planted in the middle of my book…come on Auntie Ros get your priorities right – it is time to play!. When I ignore them the pair took turns placing a toy on my chest and/or shoulder. I laugh at their antics until my stomach hurts but nothing deters them; they persevere. A word from their mother interrupts the process briefly – but they are intent on playing; once again toys are placed on various parts of my body until I relent and throw the toy for them. Buddy enjoys a game of tug of war and often fails to release the toy, ignoring Bailey’s barks of indignation and his attempts to grab it from him.
Yes, I did give in. Oh dear! My excuse is the benefit of Pet Therapy!
Each time I ventured to the kitchen I realized that I was not alone – both dogs intent on partaking in my repast. I ascertained what food could, indeed, be shared, and had no hesitation in offering small morsels – thereby endearing myself further. I can hear them muttering to each other – wow we hit the jackpot with this visitor – she plays, buys new toys and and shares food!!
Walks and exploring new territories are highlights for them. Fetching the ball is their favourite game at the oval and it continues indefinitely, or at least until the humans tire!!. The boys are currently in the process of learning to cross a road safely on command – of course, a treat assists to cement the behaviour.
I will certainly miss their antics and playing with them when I return to Melbourne. Here’s hoping they will miss me too!!!
Take care, stay safe, remember that smiling and laughter are good for all of us.
